Mexico's Independence Day was celebrated on September 12 in Vienna's Mexikoplatz, an event organized for the city's Mexican residents.

The Mexican Embassy in Vienna, which also represents Mexico in Slovakia and Slovenia, coordinated the celebration with the Mexico-Austria Association. The Vienna-based band Los Nopaleros, whose members come from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Austria, performed cumbia and psychedelic Latin rock.

The setting reaches back to 1864, when Habsburg Emperor Maximilian, brother of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, was installed as emperor of Mexico with backing from Napoleon III and Mexico's conservative faction. He was captured and executed in 1867, restoring the Mexican Republic.
